Computer Room

“I can't afford a computer at home, but it's great to be able to come to the Computer Room to use email and the internet."

The Computer Room is equipped with 9 PCs, an Apple Mac G4, and several printers, scanners, digital cameras, and other devices.  All computers are connected to the internet.

We aim to cater for everyone's computing needs, and provide plenty of support - you will never be left to get on with it in the Computer Room... unless that's what you prefer.  A lot of people feel nervous about using computers, but many of our users have said that they find the Computer Room a good place to get over their nerves!

Our Computer Room sessions are always staffed by patient and knowledgeable tutors. You can use the Open Access sessions for whatever you like - do some work, play some games, or surf the Internet.

You can book a computer in advance, by phoning 0117 955 6971 - ask for the Computer Room.

Conditions of Use

Membership

When you join, you also become a member of the Settlement for the year in which you join.

Payment

We need you to pay to use the Computer Room. Your contribution is vital – without it, the project would close. (If payment is a problem for you, please speak to one of the staff).

Booking

You can book a computer by phone on 955 6971 or in person, (just ask one of the staff on duty). If you have booked a computer but cannot come in, please phone to cancel your booking. Please note: If you have not arrived within 20 minutes of the booked start time, we reserve the right to allocate the computer to someone else.

Computer time

The maximum computer time allocated to users at peak times is 2½ hours. If there is a demand for computers please be prepared to vacate the PC after your allocated time.

Using the computers

The charges entitle you to “supported use” of the computer and any software provided. This means that, if you need help or have a problem, at least one member of staff will be on hand to help you to the best of his/her ability. Try to sort out your own problems, but don’t be frightened to ask if you get stuck! The amount of help you can expect will vary according to how busy the Computer Room is, and how many other people are using the machines. Please be realistic in your expectations.

Behaviour

Please be considerate to other users of the Computer Room. Please respect the privacy of their work. In accordance with the equality policy of the Settlement, you will be asked to leave if you make racist or sexist remarks, behave in a racist or sexist manner, or use the facilities to access pornography or other unacceptable material.

Young People

The Workshop welcomes people of all ages. Please note the following points relating to young people using the Computer Room:
