BARTON HILL SETTLEMENT CHILDREN, YOUNG PEOPLE (UNDER 18) AND VULNERABLE ADULTS POLICY. Definition Barton Hill Settlement insists that all paid and unpaid staff must not expose volunteers, activists or users to any form of ill treatment. We are particularly concerned with protecting the personal safety of children, young people (under 18) and vulnerable adults. All volunteers, staff and supervisors of Barton Hill Settlement have a responsibility to treat others with care and consideration of their human rights. The success of this policy depends on the active involvement of everyone working for Barton Hill Settlement with children, young people (under 18) and vulnerable people. This policy is available to volunteers, activists, staff and others as appropriate. Code of Practice The Central Services Manager will be a point of contact for all issues relating to working with under 18s and vulnerable adults. Information about issues of concern will be discussed discretely with agencies, volunteers, those ‘at risk’, staff and parents, where appropriate. The Central Services Manager will share information about good practice for protecting under 18s and vulnerable people with the people themselves, volunteers and staff. Barton Hill Settlement will follow clear procedures for recruitment and selection of paid and unpaid staff. This will be backed up with careful assessments of the supervision and management needs of all activities. Screening Procedure Only in exceptional circumstances will an employee or volunteer work on their own with under 18s or vulnerable people. Wherever practicable, activities involving this group will be done by at least 2 people working jointly. Barton Hill Settlement will secure two written references from reputable sources for all employees and volunteers who work with this group. Barton Hill Settlement has a policy of obtaining police checks from all employees and volunteers, including those who will be working directly with under 18s and vulnerable people, before allowing work to commence. Where paid and unpaid staff work directly with this group Barton Hill Settlement will require any agencies involved to carry out police checks. In all cases no contact will occur until the outcomes of the police checks are known and found to be satisfactory. Barton Hill Settlement will obtain permission from volunteers/employees for screening checks. Records of the checks will be kept and shown to appropriate agencies. Vulnerable people will be told to whom they should go if they have any concerns. Clear procedures for reporting incidents are included in the Complaints Procedure, Code of Conduct and Confidentiality (Whistleblowing) Policy all held in Barton Hill Settlement main Policy document file. Monitoring Screening issues, policy and procedures relating to the Barton Hill Settlement will be monitored annually. Barton Hill Settlement will require all organisations it instructs or works in partnership with, by prior formal agreement, to provide details of their screening policies and procedures for monitoring and implementing the same and the details of their screening personnel.
