Up The Ives!

The Community Work Team's annual holiday this year was to Zennor, near the tip of Cornwall.  Maggie Reardon, of the Community Work Team, went with them.  She writes:

"On a muggy August morning we boarded the coach outside the Settlement in great anticipation, we were heading to Cornwall. The group had met each other by responding to publicity looking for local families who would like to be involved in a group holiday. The group had planned to stay in a Hostel in Zennor, a small hamlet, a few miles from St Ives in Cornwall. There were seven families in the group making twenty individuals in total, we had been told to expect excellent surroundings, what a treat we were in for!

As you will see from the comments, it was a very eventful and enjoyable holiday. If you think this is something your family might be interested in for next year contact Maggie in the Community Work Team.

Thanks to Quartet community foundation for the funding towards the transport.

The scenic photographs of the holiday were taken by Mark.

“Excellent scenic views, the hostel was clean and tidy, well presented, warm and welcoming. Great pub, good food, pretty church and small museum. Every day was an adventure, cliff side walks to small coves. Zennor is great!” Clair.

“Beautiful location, Beautiful people, Fantastic holiday, Sandy beaches, What a wow factor!” Jay.

“I was a little apprehensive about going to a Hostel in the middle of nowhere with a 17 month old in tow but when I arrived the beautiful and friendly atmosphere soon changed my mind. The surroundings were some of the most serene I have ever seen. There was something for everyone to go off and do and it was also nice we got to spend some time together as a group. I wouldn’t think twice about coming again” Paula & Lilly.

“Peace & tranquillity, good air and light and on a clear night the Milky Way, a bright sparkling carpet of diamonds….. accommodation was more than adequate with very helpful staff which added up to a very restful stay.” John.

“The hostel was a good choice to stay because we were inflicted with bad weather which did not stop us from going out and getting soaking wet, on our adventures. So the hostel was the ideal place where we could dry off and have a good night’s sleep.” Mark.

“I liked playing in the brook in the garden, climbing on the rocks, I like walking and exploring. Next day I liked going to the beach in St Ives. I liked seeing Lands End and the bus trip down the coast. On the last morning I loved riding on my pony Munchkin”. Mikael 7yrs.

“I liked walking beside the beach, where I was standing I could see the most beautiful view. It was scary but fun getting chased by cows! Up on the hill I saw a really close up sunset. Me and Johanna found new hidden places. The sea was really cold but fun when we got used to it! I got really wet! Well the best other part was getting wet on the opened roof bus. He. He. He. I loved the horse riding but my bum hurt after it, the dogs there were really cute." Fiona age 10 yrs.

“I liked the idea of getting to know other people from Barton Hill better, we all got on very well. It was a good mix of people and different ages. I really enjoyed the trip, it was comfortable at the hostel and nice to have the dining room / lounge to ourselves in the evenings. I liked walking on the coastal path best of all and just being out in the countryside, I enjoyed the company too, doing things together, I feel I have made real friends.” Marion.

"Arriving at the Backpackers hostel after 5hours of travelling it was nice to have a warm bed & social space to relax in (once the kids had gone to bed)."

"We made decisions as a group, overall I had (we had) a great time even though it rained for a whole day, we had all planned to do something which meant we had a great day in spite of the rain! The accommodation was basic and pleasant, the host Julie was great and we enjoyed it. I would like to do this type of holiday again. Roll on next year. PS. we came as a group who didn’t know each other to a group who has a mutual respect for one another." Rhonda.

"Soon as we got there we decided to walk up Zennor Hill and it was a long walk, we wanted to turn back but we carried on. We kept stopping so many times to rest and we kept losing our way. After about 2 hours we made it to the top. We even bought the guitar with us to play as we went along but we wished we never had because we didn’t realise how far and high the long grass and bush was plus we were constantly stung by nettles that went up to our knees. On the way back down we found it a lot easier because it was down hill." Stephen and Connor (our teenage adventurers.)
