Bill's 10 Books to Read

These are 10 books that Time Bank member Bill recommends you read, with his comments. We have some of the books in the library. If you’d like to write a book review or recommendation for the library, we’d love to have it.

  1. Animal Farm by George Orwell – “essential reading” (copy in the library).

  2. The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Graham – “the adventures of Ratty, Mole and Mr Toad never cease to amuse both children and adults” (children’s version – not the original – in the library).

  3. The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy – “one of Hardy’s best novels” (copy in the library).

  4. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens – “probably Dickens’ finest novel, with great characters such as Miss Haversham, Abel Magwitch and Mr Jaggers” (copy in the library).

  5. The African Queen by C.S. Forester – “absorbing story of two middle-aged people fighting the Germans in Africa during World War I”.

  6. Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome – “ideal reading for a sunny day in a deck chair”.

  7. The 39 Steps by John Buchan – “still a classic thriller after 80 years in print”.

  8. A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute – “a beautifully written novel about the Second World War in the Far East and post-war Australia”.

  9. A Passage to India by E.M. Forster – “absorbing novel about the end of the British Raj in India”.

  10. Hatter’s Castle by A.J. Cronin – “engrossing novel about the Hatters family in Scotland during the early part of the last century”.
