History of the Settlement

Barton Hill Settlement in 1965

Barton Hill Settlement was established in 1911. At that time, many similar settlements were being set up around the UK and in the USA, with the aim of bringing cultural and educational opportunities to disadvantaged areas.

In Barton Hill, the Settlement was established by the University of Bristol. University staff and students lived here, setting up, amongst other things, a library. At the time, it was called the "University Settlement".

The Settlement is now an independent charity, and no longer has any formal connection to the University. Like the area of Barton Hill, the Settlement has undergone many changes over the past 100 years. Follow the links on the left to find out more!

The text on these pages has been mainly written by Will Bee, a former manager at the Settlement, for which we are very grateful.
