BHAFF – summer programme of trips

The Barton Hill Activities for Families volunteers pulled it off yet again!  Successful summer trips were organised to Bournemouth, Butlins Minehead, Barry Island and Drayton Manor.   See more pictures of our summer activities in the Picture Gallery.

If you would like to know what BHAFF volunteers have in the pipeline for 2004 and 2005, please call Sarah for details on 955 6971, or keep your eyes peeled for posters.

PC Mechanics

This computer group is continuing to be very successful attracting a range of local people, particularly men, to its Thursday evening sessions from 7 – 9 pm.  It is run by a group of local people who come together to learn and help each other with their computer problems.   They have recently received funding to buy some computer parts that they are now using for training, and they have been successful in building a computer that has then been given to a local person.

Dings Shopping Bus

This is a shopping bus that takes residents, mainly from the Dings, to Asda in Bedminster every Wednesday morning. The bus leaves at 9.30am and collects and returns residents to their front door at around 12.15pm.  This continues to be a valuable service for residents and the bus always welcomes new members.

Carry on Camping

A successful summer camp was organised to Brean this year with about 30 adults and children enjoying a mixture of weather and activities. Maggie, Community Worker with the group, wrote a brilliant diary of the trip.  Read it, and see some great pictures, in our Picture Gallery.

Disability Group

There is a new group that has recently formed who call themselves WAC (Wednesday Art Club).  They meet every Wednesday afternoon (from 1- 3pm) during term time and are currently doing an arts project with a Xmas theme. New members are always welcome.

Bridgwater Carnival Trip

Due to popular demand, we again worked with the tenants of Ashmead House to support the annual pilgrimage to the Bridgwater Carnival.

Community Work Support to Residents

The team has continued to give regular support to the residents within the New Deal for Communities area.  We actively support a large number of resident’s action groups and neighbourhood watch groups as well as individuals across the whole area. We have also given a lot of community work support to the summer consultation and information-giving programme around the Block Security and Environment Improvement Programme and proposed Master plan developments in the area.

Halloween Party

We again hosted a Halloween party at the Settlement on Friday 29th October with the BHAFF group.

Christmas Panto

The BHAFF group are also organising a trip to the Cinderella pantomime at the Bristol Hippodrome on December 22nd.

Ubax Eid party

The team are once again supporting the Ubax group to put on an Eid party to celebrate the end of Ramadan in November.  It is to be held in the Main Hall, and we anticipate that it will be a huge success again this year.

Volunteers’ Lunch

We will be holding another volunteers/activists lunch in November. The lunch is a chance for volunteers and activists connected with our project to come together and have an informal chat over lunch, along with a chance to get to know one another.

We continue to hold a six-weekly meeting for the Community Work Steering Group.  At the meeting, representatives from the different community groups we support and local community activists have the opportunity to share information about their groups and activities and hear an update of the community work team progress.  If you would like to join this group then contact Gee at the Settlement on 955 6971.

Digital Stories

The team, in partnership with the Workshop, are running this women’s course that began in October.  The support from the team consists of offering one-to-one support to women participating in the course, and helping them to gather their resources needed.  It is hoped that their work will be displayed in December when the course ends.

BHARC

The Team are looking at launching a campaign against racism in the community. Watch out for details or contact Maggie for more information at the Settlement on 955 6971.

For more information on any of the above activities and events please contact the Community Work Team at the Barton Hill Settlement, 43 Ducie Road, Barton Hill or Telephone: 0117 955 6971.
